Haitai Crane’s portable gantry crane delivers 1-10 ton full overhead lifting capability without permanent infrastructure. Designed for workshops, maintenance bays, construction sites, and field service operations, the crane assembles without special tools, relocates on caster wheels, and adjusts to match the exact span and height your job requires. From a 1-ton lightweight steel frame to a 10-ton heavy-duty gantry, the range covers the full spectrum of light-to-medium industrial lifting.

What Is a Portable Gantry Crane?

A portable gantry crane is a mobile lifting system built around a steel frame supported by four detachable legs. These four legs can be bolted together without tools, allowing quick assembly, relocation, and disassembly. Therefore, this flexible portable gantry crane is ideal for workshops, warehouses, and temporary job sites where a fixed crane would be impractical.

The overhead bridge runs on rails or rollers, allowing smooth horizontal travel. A hoist (electric hoist, hydraulic hoist, or manual hoist available) raises and lowers loads up to 10 tons with a usable span of  2‑16 m and a lift height of 2‑12 m.

Configurations allow users to adjust leg length, spread, and accessories such as spreader beams or trolleys, making the portable gantry crane ideal for occasional lifts where a fixed crane would be impractical or costly.

Users can choose custom steel‑section sizes, leg configurations, and accessories such as spreader beams or trolley systems to match specific workflow requirements. This flexibility, combined with tool‑free assembly, provides a safe, efficient, and adaptable solution for a wide range of material‑handling tasks.

Key Features & Design Advantages

Haitai portable gantry cranes have six key features in structure design, customizable parameters, and high working compatibility.

portable gantry crane structure

◆  Bolt-Together Frame — No Welding Required

All structural connections use high-tensile bolted joints (Grade 8.8 fasteners). Assembly requires only standard spanners — no welding equipment, no certified welder, no hot-work permit. Typical assembly time: 2 technicians, 1–2 hours depending on span.

◆  Adjustable Span and Height

Telescoping leg and beam sections allow span and height to be set at multiple fixed positions within the rated range. Adjustment is tool-free on adjustable models. Locks positively at each setting with through-bolt and safety pin.

◆  360° Swivel Casters with Brake

Heavy-duty polyurethane casters allow the crane to be repositioned by hand without load. Individual wheel brakes lock the crane at the working position. Caster load rating matches crane capacity at rated span with standard safety factor.

◆  Lightweight Steel Option for Easy Relocation

Light-section steel frames on 1t–3t models are designed to minimise dead weight without compromising structural integrity. Leg and beam sections are sized for two-person handling and transport in a standard van or pickup bed.

◆  Modular Sections for Transport

All models disassemble into sections that fit standard van or pickup bed. Models up to 3t are sized to fit a standard van or pickup bed when disassembled. All sections are clearly marked for fast reassembly in the field.

◆  Compatible with Standard Hoists

Bottom flange of the main beam is machined to standard I-beam profile (per BS 4 / DIN 1025), accepting any standard manual chain hoist, electric chain hoist, or wire rope hoist with appropriate hook or trolley fitting.

Application Scenarios of Portable Gantry Crane

  • Workshop and Manufacturing Facility Maintenance: Permanent overhead crane infrastructure is not always justified for maintenance bays and small production cells. A portable gantry crane fills this gap: it sits in a corner when not needed, rolls to the machine being serviced, and returns to storage in minutes. For facilities with multiple scattered maintenance points, a single portable gantry replaces multiple fixed jib cranes at a fraction of the capital cost.
  • Construction and Contractor Sites: On construction projects, portable gantry cranes handle pre-cast concrete elements, structural steel sections, HVAC plant, and mechanical equipment at locations where a mobile crane cannot access or where the lift duration does not justify crane hire cost. The crane assembles in under two hours on site, relocates between floors or building zones on its casters, and transports between sites in a standard pickup or van.
  • Field Service and Offshore Maintenance: Equipment service technicians use Haitai portable gantry cranes for field engine overhauls, pump and motor exchanges, and equipment installation in locations with no fixed lifting infrastructure. The crane’s bolt-together steel frame disassembles into manageable sections — 1t–2t models can be transported and handled by two technicians without additional equipment.
  • Temporary Production Line Lifting: Production expansions, line reconfigurations, and equipment changeovers often require temporary overhead lifting that would take weeks to install as a permanent system. A portable gantry crane is operational in hours, can be repositioned as the production layout evolves, and relocated or sold when the project concludes — preserving capital rather than converting it to a fixed structural asset.
  • Shipyard and Marine Maintenance: Portable steel gantry cranes rated 2t–5t are widely used in shipyard dry dock operations, engine room maintenance, and coastal construction where outdoor durability is mandatory. Hot-dip galvanized finish provides long-term corrosion resistance in salt-air environments; stainless steel hardware package is available on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

For any unanswered questions, reach out to oursupport team via email. We'll respond as soon aspossible to assist you.
Q1: Can the portable gantry crane be used outdoors?
Yes. All Haitai portable gantry cranes are constructed from structural steel (Q345B) with hot-dip galvanized finish as standard, making them fully suitable for outdoor use. For outdoor operation, confirm the crane is rated for wind loading at your site (standard portable gantry cranes are rated for use in wind speeds up to Beaufort 6 / 12 m/s when loaded; the crane must not be operated in higher wind conditions). Caster wheel brakes must be engaged during all lifting operations. For permanent outdoor installation without mobility requirements, outrigger feet replace casters and the crane must be anchored per the installation manual.
Q2: What surface does the portable gantry crane need to stand on?
The crane requires a firm, level surface capable of supporting the outrigger or caster point loads without settlement. On casters, each wheel applies a point load equal to approximately (crane self-weight + rated load) ÷ 4. For a 5t crane with a 700 kg frame, each wheel applies approximately 1,425 kg under full load. Concrete and compacted asphalt are generally adequate; soft ground, gravel, or uneven surfaces require spreader plates under the caster feet. The assembly manual includes point load specifications for all standard configurations.
Q3: Can the crane be used to lift a load and then travel with it?
Travelling with a suspended load is permitted under specific conditions: the crane must be on a smooth, firm, level surface; travel speed must be slow (walking pace); the load must be guided to prevent swing; and the load weight must be within the crane's rated capacity at the set span. Travelling with loads must not be performed on ramps, soft surfaces, or where there is any risk of caster wheel sinkage. Always consult the supplied operation manual and local lifting regulations before travelling with loads.
Q4: What is the difference between adjustable and fixed frame models?
Adjustable frame models use telescoping leg and beam sections that can be set to different span and height positions within the rated range. This flexibility suits operations where the crane serves multiple lifting tasks at different locations. Fixed frame models are manufactured to a single specified dimension, with no adjustment mechanism. Fixed frames are structurally simpler, typically lighter at the same capacity, and may offer a slightly higher rated capacity at the specified dimension. They are preferred when the crane will always be used at the same span and height — for example, as a dedicated lifting aid at a fixed workstation.
Q5: Does Haitai Crane supply the crane with a hoist, or is it crane-only?
Both options are available. Haitai Crane supplies crane-only units (beam and frame, no hoist) for customers who have existing compatible hoists, and complete lifting packages with a factory-matched hoist and trolley. When ordering a complete package, specify your power supply voltage and frequency (for electric hoists), required lift speed, and duty cycle. Haitai's engineering team selects and matches the hoist to the crane capacity and beam section, ensuring trolley wheel gauge and load rating are compatible. A matched package also simplifies CE documentation, as a single Declaration of Conformity covers the crane and hoist as an assembly.

HaiTai hydraulic straddle carriers lifting container in port terminal
Hydraulic Straddle Carrier for Sale – Container Handling

If you handle heavy containers, steel structures, or oversized industrial cargo — and your site lacks fixed power infrastructure — a hydraulic straddle carrier is likely the most practical solution available. It lifts, travels, and places loads without needing overhead structures, rails, or high-voltage power supply. One machine. Full mobility. Minimal civil works. What Is a Hydraulic Straddle Carrier? The Core Concept A hydraulic straddle carrier is a self-propelled heavy lift vehicle. It straddles a load — lifting from below using a hydraulic spreader or lifting beam — and moves freely across the yard on rubber tyres. The entire lift-and-travel cycle is powered by an onboard diesel-hydraulic system. Unlike electric or cable-reel powered cranes, the hydraulic straddle carrier carries its own power source. This makes it fully independent of yard infrastructure. You can deploy it anywhere your surface can support the wheel loads — no fixed installation required. How the Hydraulic System Works The engine drives hydraulic pumps that supply pressurized fluid to the lift cylinders, drive motors, and steering actuators. All motion — lifting, lowering, travelling, and steering —…
