<figure class="wp-block-table"><table class="has-fixed-layout"><thead><tr><th>Series</th><th>Capacity</th><th>Typical Vessel Type</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Light</td><td>35T – 75T</td><td>Sailing yachts, small motor boats</td></tr><tr><td>Medium</td><td>100T – 200T</td><td>Fishing vessels, patrol boats</td></tr><tr><td>Heavy</td><td>250T – 500T</td><td>Superyachts, coast guard craft</td></tr><tr><td>Ultra</td><td>600T – 1000T</td><td>Offshore vessels, naval ships</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Application Scenarios</h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Marina &amp; Yacht Club Operations</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Marine Travel Lift are built for the daily rhythm of marina life. A single operator can haul out, move, and relaunch multiple vessels per shift. The adjustable sling spacing handles everything from narrow-keeled racers to wide-beam catamarans without rigging changes.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Typical cycle time for a 50T lift: <strong>under 30 minutes</strong> from waterside haul-out to hard-standing placement.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Commercial Boatyard &amp; Repair Facility</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For yards handling 500 to 2,000 vessel movements per year, throughput is everything. Our medium-series travel lifts (100T–200T) are designed for continuous duty-cycle operation — two-shift, year-round, in saltwater environments. Variable-frequency drives reduce mechanical wear and extend service intervals.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Naval &amp; Government Facility</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Naval applications demand certification. Our 150T–500T units are available with third-party class certification from DNV GL, Bureau Veritas, ABS, and Lloyd&#8217;s Register. We have supplied naval maintenance facilities across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Superyacht Refit Centre</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Composite and aluminium hulls are unforgiving of rough handling. Our heavy-series units use synchronised multi-point hoist control — all lift points rise and fall together, within ±10 mm of each other. Sling tension monitoring prevents localised hull stress.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Crane Features</h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Self-Propelled Rubber-Tyred Portal Frame</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The entire machine travels on rubber-tyred axles. No rails, no pits, no concrete channel cuts. Drive it into the water, engage the slings, lift, and go. The compact footprint fits standard marina pier widths from 6 metres.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Adjustable Span for Every Hull Type</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Telescopic spreader beams allow span adjustment from <strong>6.0 m to 28.0 m</strong>. Catamaran models with independently adjustable inner sling positions are available across the full capacity range. One machine handles your entire fleet.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Variable-Frequency AC Drive</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All hoist motors and travel drives use AC inverter control (Danfoss, ABB, or Siemens). This delivers smooth, stepless speed control from zero to full travel speed — critical when maneuvering a 200-tonne yacht through a tight yard gate. Energy consumption is up to <strong>30% lower</strong> than conventional contactor-switched systems.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">PLC Control &amp; Safety Architecture</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Every unit is equipped with a Siemens S7 or Allen-Bradley PLC, 7-inch colour HMI touchscreen, and joystick pendant. Safety systems include load cells on every hoist block (±0.5% accuracy), anti-sway logic, travel limit switches, emergency stops, and optional wireless remote control up to 100 metres range.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Marine-Grade Protection Throughout</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Saltwater destroys standard electrical equipment within months. Our travel lifts use IP65-sealed enclosures, 316 stainless steel hardware, and corrosion-inhibited hydraulic circuits. The structural steel is hot-dip galvanized or finished with a marine-grade multi-coat epoxy system. Salt-fog tested per IEC 60068-2-11.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Multi-Mode Steering</h4>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table class="has-fixed-layout"><thead><tr><th>Steering Mode</th><th>Use Case</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Straight travel</td><td>Open yard transit</td></tr><tr><td>Crab steer</td><td>Moving parallel to a pier without turning</td></tr><tr><td>90° spin</td><td>Reversing into a tight storage bay</td></tr><tr><td>Full independent</td><td>Precision positioning around fixed obstacles</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Technical Parameters</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table class="has-fixed-layout"><thead><tr><th>Parameter</th><th>35T–75T</th><th>100T–200T</th><th>250T–500T</th><th>600T–1000T</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Lifting Capacity</td><td>35 / 50 / 75T</td><td>100 / 150 / 200T</td><td>250 / 300 / 500T</td><td>600 / 800 / 1000T</td></tr><tr><td>Span Width</td><td>6.0–9.5 m</td><td>9.0–14.0 m</td><td>12.0–20.0 m</td><td>18.0–28.0 m</td></tr><tr><td>Clearance Height</td><td>7.0–10.0 m</td><td>10.0–14.0 m</td><td>13.0–18.0 m</td><td>16.0–24.0 m</td></tr><tr><td>Hoist Speed (full load)</td><td>1.0–2.0 m/min</td><td>0.5–1.5 m/min</td><td>0.3–1.0 m/min</td><td>0.2–0.8 m/min</td></tr><tr><td>Travel Speed (loaded)</td><td>0–8 km/h</td><td>0–6 km/h</td><td>0–4 km/h</td><td>0–3 km/h</td></tr><tr><td>Wheel Axles</td><td>4</td><td>6–8</td><td>8–16</td><td>16–24</td></tr><tr><td>Ground Pressure</td><td>≤ 8 kg/cm²</td><td>≤ 10 kg/cm²</td><td>≤ 12 kg/cm²</td><td>≤ 15 kg/cm²</td></tr><tr><td>Power Supply</td><td>380–440V / 3Ph</td><td>380–690V / 3Ph</td><td>380–690V / 3Ph</td><td>380–690V / 3Ph</td></tr><tr><td>Electrical Protection</td><td>IP55 / IP65 opt</td><td>IP55 / IP65 opt</td><td>IP65 std</td><td>IP65 std</td></tr><tr><td>Operating Temp.</td><td>−20°C to +50°C</td><td>−20°C to +50°C</td><td>−20°C to +50°C</td><td>−20°C to +50°C</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Hatch cover gantry cranes are primarily installed on bulk carriers and handysize/handymax vessels equipped with lift-away pontoon hatch covers, where their rail-mounted design enables efficient, sequential handling of individual cover panels during cargo operations.</li>

<li>They are also widely applied on general cargo and multipurpose vessels, which frequently require flexible deck arrangements and therefore benefit from the crane&#8217;s ability to lift, shift and stack hatch covers without external assistance.</li>

<li>The hatch cover cranes see extensive service aboard coasters and inland/river-sea vessels fitted with lighter hatch cover panels, where their compact structure and moderate lifting capacities make them well-suited to smaller hatch openings and constrained deck spaces.</li>

<li>Shipyard retrofit and hatch cover crane replacement projects represent another key application area, as existing vessels may upgrade or renew their hatch cover handling systems to improve operational safety, reduce crew workload or extend service life.</li>

</figure>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Structure and Operating Principle</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A boat jib crane consists of four core components: a vertical mast (column), a horizontal jib arm (boom), a rotation mechanism, and a hoisting unit. The mast is anchored to a concrete dock foundation or structural wall; the jib arm extends horizontally over the water or work area and rotates through a defined arc — 180°, 270°, or a full 360° depending on the mounting configuration and site geometry.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The hoist — either an electric chain hoist or wire rope hoist — travels along the jib arm, allowing the operator to position the hook precisely over the load before lifting. This combination of rotation and trolley travel gives a boat jib crane full coverage of its working radius without requiring the crane to move along a track or rail, which makes it particularly effective in space-restricted dock and marina environments.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">How It Differs From a Boat Lift Gantry Crane</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Boat jib cranes and boat lift gantry cranes serve different operational profiles. A gantry crane straddles the vessel on two portal legs and requires significant apron width and a prepared rail or runway surface. A jib crane occupies a single column footprint and needs no ground-level rail infrastructure — making it substantially lower in both civil works cost and installation time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For marinas, yacht clubs, and small shipyards handling vessels up to 20 t, a jib crane typically offers the better cost-to-capability ratio. For commercial shipyards handling vessels above 50 t with multi-point lifting requirements, a gantry configuration is generally more appropriate.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Key Features of HaiTai Boat Jib Cranes</h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Marine-Grade Corrosion Protection</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Salt spray is the primary structural threat in any coastal installation. HaiTai boat jib cranes are finished to <strong>C4–C5 corrosion category</strong> per ISO 12944, using a three-layer system: hot-dip galvanizing on structural steel, epoxy intermediate coat, and marine-grade topcoat. Electrical enclosures are rated <strong>IP65 minimum</strong> to prevent moisture ingress. Core mechanical components — bearings, gearboxes, hoist motors — are specified for marine environmental exposure, not adapted from standard industrial product lines.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is the specification difference that determines whether a crane lasts 3 years or 15 years on a working dock.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">360° Rotation with VFD Control</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All motorized rotation models are equipped with <strong>variable frequency drive (VFD)</strong> control on both the slewing mechanism and hoist. VFD control eliminates the mechanical shock loads that occur with direct-on-line motor starting — a critical feature when handling boats, where sudden load movement can cause vessel damage or operator safety incidents. Rotation speed is adjustable; load positioning is smooth and controllable from full-radius swing down to fine-increment adjustment.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Multiple Mounting Configurations</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">HaiTai boat jib cranes are available in four mounting configurations to match different site conditions:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Column-mounted (floor-anchored)</strong>: standard configuration for solid concrete docks; requires foundation anchor bolt embedment to structural engineer&#8217;s specification</li>

<li><strong>Wall-mounted</strong>: fixed to a structural quay wall or building column; reduces footprint but requires wall structural capacity verification</li>

<li><strong>Dock-embedded</strong>: mast integrated into the dock structure during construction; maximum stability for permanent installations</li>

<li><strong>Floating dock</strong>: available with reinforced base plate and ballast provisions; requires dock structural engineering sign-off</li>
</ul>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Safety Systems</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Every HaiTai boat jib crane is supplied with a standard safety package compliant with <strong><a href="https://webstore.ansi.org/preview-pages/BSI/preview_30357381.pdf?srsltid=AfmBOorWHxggDgaTB0Wo0DLXSs-bgJ5PSxGhq_AV7ajgEVoAO6np41um" target="_blank" rel="noopener">EN 15011</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://www.scribd.com/doc/207872183/FEM-1-001-Rules-for-the-Design-of-Hoisting-Appliances" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FEM 1.001</a></strong>:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Overload protection limiter (cuts power at 110% SWL)</li>

<li>Upper and lower hook travel limit switches</li>

<li>Emergency stop on pendant and remote control</li>

<li>Anti-sway control (available on electric models)</li>

<li>Fail-safe brake on hoist motor</li>

<li>Storm anchor provisions for outdoor installations</li>
</ul>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Application Scenarios</h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Marinas and Yacht Clubs</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For facilities handling recreational vessels in the 0.5–10 t range, a column-mounted boat jib crane with 180°–270° rotation covers the standard dock-side lifting requirement: boat launching, retrieval, mast removal, and outboard engine servicing. A 5 t unit with a 6 m jib covers most vessels up to 40 ft LOA. Radio remote control allows single-operator handling, reducing labor cost on every launch cycle.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Shipyards and Dry Docks</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Shipyard applications demand heavier capacity and higher duty cycles. A 10–20 t boat jib crane positioned at a dry dock entrance handles small vessel placement and removal, equipment transfer, and component lifting during repair cycles. For shipyards processing multiple vessels per day, HaiTai recommends FEM <strong>3m duty class</strong> specification and wire rope hoist over chain hoist for extended service life under high-frequency operation.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Ports and Commercial Docks</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Port installations handling workboats, patrol vessels, and small cargo craft benefit from 360° rotation — allowing the crane to serve both the waterside and landside of a dock without repositioning. A 15–20 t unit with a 8–10 m boom covers most workboat handling requirements and can be equipped with an optional boat lifting frame and sling set for vessels without dedicated lifting points.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Onboard Vessel Applications</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Deck-mounted boat jib cranes serve offshore vessels, naval platforms, and large yachts for handling tenders, rescue craft, and deck cargo. These installations require compliance with class society certification — <strong>CCS, ABS, BV, DNV, or LR</strong> depending on vessel flag state — and are supplied with classification society survey documentation on request.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How to Choose the Right Boat Jib Crane</h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Step 1 — Confirm Your Maximum Vessel Weight</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Apply a minimum <strong>25% margin</strong> above the heaviest vessel you will handle. A 4 t vessel requires a 5 t crane. This margin absorbs dynamic load factors during water-to-land transfer — the load does not lift clean in marine conditions; wind, wave action, and water drainage all add momentary overload. Specifying at exactly your vessel weight is an underspecification.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Step 2 — Determine Required Jib Length</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Jib length must clear the dock edge and reach the centerline of the vessel&#8217;s lifting point — typically the keel or dedicated lifting eyes. Measure from the column centerline to the vessel&#8217;s furthest lifting point, add 0.5–1 m clearance, and that is your minimum jib length. For dock edges with fender systems or safety rails, add fender projection to this measurement.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Step 3 — Select Rotation Angle</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If the crane serves only one side of a dock (waterside lifting only), 180° rotation is sufficient and mechanically simpler. If the crane needs to transfer loads from water to a land-side staging area, 270° or 360° rotation is required. Confirm this against your site plan before specifying — adding rotation range after manufacture is not feasible.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Step 4 — Specify Duty Class</h4>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table class="has-fixed-layout"><thead><tr><th>Operation Type</th><th>Daily Lift Cycles</th><th>Recommended FEM Class</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Seasonal marina, low frequency</td><td>1–5</td><td>1Am</td></tr><tr><td>Active marina, regular use</td><td>5–15</td><td>2m</td></tr><tr><td>Shipyard, production use</td><td>15–30</td><td>3m</td></tr><tr><td>Commercial port, intensive</td><td>30+</td><td>3m–4m</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Step 5 — Confirm Installation Environment</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Coastal saltwater environments require C4–C5 corrosion specification as a minimum. Tropical or offshore environments with continuous salt spray exposure should specify C5-M (marine) per <a href="https://www.iso.org/standard/77795.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ISO 12944</a>. Confirm also the available power supply (voltage, frequency, available amperage) before equipment order — HaiTai supports global voltage standards but needs confirmed site supply data for motor specification.</p>

If yes, a marine arm crane is almost certainly the right choice.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">The Core Design Concept</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A marine arm crane — also called a knuckle boom crane or articulated marine crane — uses two or more boom sections connected by hydraulic-powered knuckle joints. This articulation allows the crane to fold, extend, and position the hook with much greater reach flexibility than a single fixed boom.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The result is a crane that can reach outboard over the vessel&#8217;s side, work in a downward arc below deck level, retract compactly against the superstructure when not in use, and handle loads in positions that a straight-boom crane would require repositioning the vessel to reach.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Product Specifications</h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Standard Capacity and Reach Overview</h4>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table class="has-fixed-layout"><thead><tr><th>Model Class</th><th>SWL at Max Outreach</th><th>Max Outreach</th><th>Typical Vessel Type</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Light Series</td><td>1T – 5T</td><td>6m – 12m</td><td>Fishing, patrol, small research</td></tr><tr><td>Medium Series</td><td>6T – 15T</td><td>10m – 18m</td><td>OSV, general cargo, coastguard</td></tr><tr><td>Heavy Series</td><td>16T – 30T</td><td>14m – 24m</td><td>Platform supply, cable-lay</td></tr><tr><td>Custom Heavy</td><td>31T – 50T</td><td>18m – 30m</td><td>Offshore construction, naval</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">SWL is rated at maximum outreach. At reduced radius, capacity increases per the load chart. Always request the full load curve — not just the headline SWL figure — when comparing models.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Core Technical Parameters</h4>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table class="has-fixed-layout"><thead><tr><th>Parameter</th><th>Specification Range</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Safe Working Load (SWL)</td><td>1T – 50T (standard); higher on request</td></tr><tr><td>Boom Outreach</td><td>6m – 30m</td></tr><tr><td>Hook Height Above Deck</td><td>Up to 20m (model dependent)</td></tr><tr><td>Below-Deck Reach</td><td>Up to -8m (double knuckle models)</td></tr><tr><td>Slewing Range</td><td>360° continuous</td></tr><tr><td>Slewing Speed</td><td>0 – 2.5 rpm</td></tr><tr><td>Hoisting Speed</td><td>8 – 40 m/min (full load)</td></tr><tr><td>Drive System</td><td>Fully hydraulic (electro-hydraulic HPU)</td></tr><tr><td>Control Options</td><td>Cabin, pendant, or radio remote control</td></tr><tr><td>Pedestal Type</td><td>Fixed or deck-mounted rotating pedestal</td></tr><tr><td>Classification Standards</td><td>DNV ST-0378, ABS, BV, LR, CCS</td></tr><tr><td>Marine Coating System</td><td>Sa 2.5 blast + 250-micron DFT epoxy</td></tr><tr><td>Operating Temperature</td><td>-30°C to +55°C</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Control System Options</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Three control configurations are available, and the right choice depends on how the crane is operated:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Fixed cabin control</strong> — for cranes above 20T SWL where the operator needs full visibility and enclosed protection. Standard on heavy offshore models.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Pendant control</strong> — a wired handheld unit that allows the operator to move around the deck while controlling the crane. Widely used on fishing and small OSV applications where the operator needs direct line of sight to the load.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Radio remote control</strong> — wireless pendant, typically with a safety dead-man switch. Increasingly specified on research and survey vessels where operator positioning is unpredictable. Requires a certified radio control system per IEC 60945 marine electronics standard.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="#popup-form" class="open-form-btn andb-btn popup-modal">Get Quote</a></p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Application Scenarios</h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Offshore Supply Vessels (OSV) and Platform Support</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Marine arm cranes on offshore supply vessels handle cargo transfer between the vessel and fixed or floating platforms. This is among the most demanding crane operating environments: the vessel is in motion, the platform is fixed, and the load swings unpredictably in the gap between them.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For this application, cranes are designed and certified to DNV ST-0378 (the primary offshore crane standard). Active heave compensation (AHC) — a system that automatically counteracts vertical vessel motion during the lift — is available on models above 15T SWL for OSV applications. This significantly reduces dynamic load peaks and improves safety during personnel and equipment transfers.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Fishing and Aquaculture Vessels</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fishing vessel cranes are among the highest duty-cycle marine crane applications. They operate repeatedly throughout every working day — net handling, catch transfer, cage management in aquaculture, and supply boat transfers.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Compact knuckle boom cranes in the 2T–10T range are the standard for this sector. Key selection criteria are: duty cycle rating (FEM 1.001 class A5 or higher), corrosion resistance of all exposed components, and simplicity of maintenance — fishing operations frequently take place far from service infrastructure.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Research, Survey, and Oceanographic Vessels</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Research vessel cranes handle scientific equipment, sampling devices, ROV deployment frames, and instrumentation — often at significant water depth. The defining requirement is precision: equipment worth millions of dollars must be lowered through the water column with controlled speed and minimal swing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Double-knuckle marine arm cranes with variable-speed hoisting and radio remote control are standard for research vessel applications. Winch integration — coordinating crane hoisting speed with a separate oceanographic winch — is a common custom requirement for this sector.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Naval and Coastguard Vessels</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Naval applications introduce requirements beyond commercial standards: shock resistance to MIL-S-901 or equivalent, reduced acoustic signature, corrosion protection to the highest marine grade, and in some cases explosion-proof electrical systems. We design and manufacture naval-specification marine arm cranes with full documentation support for naval procurement processes.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Inland and Coastal Workboats</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not all marine arm crane applications are offshore. River workboats, dredgers, environmental response vessels, and port service craft all use compact arm cranes for equipment handling, anchor work, and supply transfers. For these applications, the key drivers are compact stowed dimensions, low weight, and maintainability by non-specialist crews.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Certification and Compliance</h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Classification Society Requirements</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A marine arm crane installed on a commercial vessel requires certification by the vessel&#8217;s classification society. This is a mandatory condition of the vessel&#8217;s class certificate. The classification society reviews the crane&#8217;s structural design, manufacturing process, and load test results before issuing the crane certificate.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.cranehaitai.com/" data-type="page" data-id="231">HT crane</a> manufacture to the requirements of all major classification societies:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><a href="https://ww2.eagle.org/en.html" data-type="link" data-id="https://ww2.eagle.org/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>ABS</strong> – American Bureau of Shipping, widely required for US-flag and international vessels</a></li>

<li><a href="https://group.bureauveritas.com/" data-type="link" data-id="https://group.bureauveritas.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Bureau Veritas (BV)</strong> – common for French-flag and West African trade</a></li>

<li><a href="https://rs-class.org/en/" data-type="link" data-id="https://rs-class.org/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>RS Certificate</strong>-Russian Maritime Register of Shipping</a></li>

<li><a href="https://www.ccs.org.cn/ccswzen/" data-type="link" data-id="https://www.ccs.org.cn/ccswzen/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>CCS</strong> – China Classification Society, required for Chinese-flag vessels</a></li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Classification certificates are issued by the independent surveyor — not by the manufacturer. The surveyor witnesses load testing at our factory and signs off on the certificate. Buyers should always verify that the certificate is issued by the classification society directly, not by a third-party testing company acting on the society&#8217;s behalf.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="#popup-form" class="open-form-btn andb-btn popup-modal">Get Quote</a></p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Supplier Evaluation: Five Questions to Ask</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before committing to a marine arm crane purchase, verify these five points with any supplier:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>1. Does the crane have type approval from the required classification society?</strong> Ask for the type approval certificate number and verify it directly with the classification society. Type approval means the design has been independently reviewed — not just tested in isolation.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>2. Is factory load testing witnessed by the classification surveyor?</strong> Witnessed testing is the standard. A certificate issued on documentation alone is not equivalent and may not be accepted by your flag state authority.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>3. What is the hydraulic system specification?</strong> Marine hydraulic systems should use marine-grade fluid, stainless steel fittings in salt-water exposure zones, and corrosion-resistant cylinder rod materials. Ask for the hydraulic system specification in writing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>4. What coating system is applied?</strong> The industry standard for offshore marine environments is Sa 2.5 abrasive blast preparation followed by a three-coat epoxy system with minimum 250 microns dry film thickness. Cranes with inadequate coating degrade rapidly in salt-water service.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>5. What spare parts are stocked and where?</strong> For vessels operating internationally, spare parts lead time is critical. Confirm which components are stocked at the manufacturer&#8217;s facility and what the maximum lead time is for critical hydraulic components.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Conclusion</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A marine arm crane is a long-life investment that shapes your vessel&#8217;s operational capability for 20 years or more. The knuckle boom configuration offers reach flexibility, compact stowage, and precision load placement that fixed-boom cranes cannot match — and for the vessel types and operations described in this article, it is the more practical and capable choice.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Specification clarity and supplier verification are the two things that most directly determine whether the investment pays off. Define your SWL, outreach, duty cycle, and classification requirement clearly. Then verify your supplier&#8217;s credentials with the same rigor you would apply to any critical marine equipment purchase.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">The Basic Function</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A ship deck crane is a rotating lifting device permanently mounted on a vessel&#8217;s deck. It handles cargo loading and unloading at ports where shore-based equipment is unavailable or insufficient. It also supports deck operations, equipment transfers, and maintenance lifts during voyage.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vessel self-sufficiency is the core value a deck crane provides. Ships calling at remote ports, anchorage transfers, or offshore locations cannot rely on shore crane availability. A properly specified deck crane eliminates that dependency and expands the vessel&#8217;s operational range.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Where Deck Cranes Are Used</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ship deck cranes are installed across a wide range of vessel types. Each application has distinct requirements that drive the specification:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>General cargo vessels</strong> – Multi-purpose cranes handling bagged goods, breakbulk, and palletized cargo</li>

<li><strong>Bulk carriers</strong> – High-capacity cranes with grab attachments for self-unloading at minor ports</li>

<li><strong>Offshore supply vessels (OSV)</strong> – Cranes with active heave compensation for dynamic sea-state operations</li>

<li><strong>Research and survey vessels</strong> – Deck cranes with precision control for equipment deployment</li>

<li><strong>Fishing and aquaculture vessels</strong> – Compact cranes for net handling, cage management, and supply transfer</li>

<li><strong>Naval and government vessels</strong> – Special-duty cranes with explosion-proof or corrosion-resistant specifications</li>
</ul>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Hydraulic vs Electric: The Primary Configuration Choice</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most buyers face this choice early. Both configurations are proven and widely deployed. The right choice depends on the vessel&#8217;s existing systems and operational profile.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Classification Society Certification</h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Why Certification Matters</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A ship deck crane installed on a commercial vessel must be certified by a recognized classification society. This is not optional — it is a condition of the vessel&#8217;s class certificate and P&amp;I insurance coverage. Operating an uncertified or improperly certified crane creates legal liability and may void the vessel&#8217;s insurance in the event of an incident.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The certification process covers structural design review, material traceability, manufacturing quality audits, and witnessed load testing. The classification society issues a crane certificate that is renewed on a defined inspection cycle — typically every five years with annual surveys.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Classification Societies We Work With</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We design and manufacture to the requirements of all major classification societies:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><a href="https://ww2.eagle.org/en.html" data-type="link" data-id="https://ww2.eagle.org/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>ABS</strong> – American Bureau of Shipping</a></li>

<li><strong><a href="https://group.bureauveritas.com/" data-type="link" data-id="https://group.bureauveritas.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bureau Veritas (BV)</a></strong></li>

<li><a href="https://www.ccs.org.cn/ccswzen/" data-type="link" data-id="https://www.ccs.org.cn/ccswzen/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>CCS</strong> – China Classification Society</a></li>

<li><strong><a href="https://rs-class.org/en/" data-type="link" data-id="https://rs-class.org/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Russian Maritime Register of Shipping（RS）</a></strong></li>

<li><strong>RINA, NK, KR</strong> – available on request</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Buyers specify their required class at the time of order. The classification society surveyor attends factory load testing and issues the certificate directly to the buyer. We do not issue classification certificates — the independent surveyor does. This distinction matters for buyers evaluating supplier credibility.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Application Deep Dive</h3>

<div class="wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex">
<div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow">
<h4 class="wp-block-heading">General Cargo and Breakbulk Vessels</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For general cargo vessels calling at minor ports across Southeast Asia, West Africa, and South America, the deck crane is the primary cargo handling system. The specification centers on reach, hook height, and cycle speed — because cargo dwell time at anchor or berth directly affects voyage economics.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A typical twin-crane arrangement — two 25T cranes at midship — allows tandem lifts up to 50T and provides redundancy if one crane requires maintenance. This is the most common configuration for 5,000–15,000 DWT general cargo vessels.</p>
</div>

<div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow">
<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Offshore Supply and Platform Support Vessels</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Offshore crane operations introduce dynamic load factors that shore or port cranes do not face. Vessel motion in sea states, load swing during transfers, and the risk of personnel being struck by moving loads all require specific design provisions.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Offshore deck cranes for OSV applications are designed to DNV ST-0378 (formerly DNV 2.22) standard. Active heave compensation (AHC) systems — which counteract vessel heave during lifts — are available for crane models above 25T SWL where offshore transfer operations are a primary function.</p>
</div>

<div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow">
<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Bulk Carrier Self-Unloading</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Bulk carriers operating on short-sea routes or calling at ports without shore-based grab unloaders use deck cranes with hydraulic grab attachments for self-unloading. Crane selection for this application prioritizes grab capacity, slewing speed, and duty cycle rating — bulk unloading is a high-cycle operation that demands a crane designed for Class A6 or higher duty classification.</p>
</div>
</div>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Supplier Selection: What to Verify</h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Five Checks Before You Order</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Buying a ship deck crane is a long-term commitment. The crane will be in service for 10-20 years. Supplier reliability matters more here than in almost any other equipment category. Before placing an order, verify:</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong><a href="https://ww2.eagle.org/en.html" data-type="link" data-id="https://ww2.eagle.org/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Classification society approval</a></strong> – Does the supplier have type approval or design appraisal from your required class? Ask for the approval certificate number.</li>

<li><strong>Factory witnessed load testing</strong> – Is the class surveyor present at load testing, or is the certificate issued on documentation alone? Witnessed testing is the correct standard.</li>

<li><strong>Marine coating specification</strong> – What is the coating system? A proper marine environment system requires surface preparation to Sa 2.5 and a minimum 250-micron DFT epoxy system. Ask for the coating spec in writing.</li>

<li><strong>Spare parts supply commitment</strong> – Are critical hydraulic and structural components available for 10+ years? Get this in writing.</li>

<li><strong>Reference vessels</strong> – Can the supplier provide the name and IMO number of vessels carrying their cranes? This is verifiable through public registries.</li>
</ol>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A supplier who hesitates on any of these five points is a risk regardless of their price.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A ship deck crane is a critical piece of vessel infrastructure. It determines operational independence, affects cargo handling productivity, and carries regulatory and insurance obligations that follow the vessel for its entire service life.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The specification process is not complicated — but it requires clarity on your load case, your vessel&#8217;s power system, your classification society, and your operating environment. Get those four elements right, and the crane selection becomes straightforward.</p>
